Review of Gasworks Talk To The Clapham Society: 15 May 2026

In 1982, the collector and philanthropist Robert Loder along with sculptor Anthony Caro established Triangle Network -an international non profit arts organisation. They did this by organising a two- week workshop in New York State for 25 emerging and mid career artists from the UK, USA and Canada. The workshops went on to become an annual even held in various , often southern African locations with an expanding group of nations represented.

The network now connects organisations in over 40 countries.

In 1994 Robert Loder purchased a building in the shadow of Oval cricket ground and this became the home of Gasworks -an inherent part of the Triangle Network. The founding artists included Hew Locke, Sonya Boyce and Joy Gregory who have all gone on to become internationally recognised practitioners.

Having explained this background, the current curator Rosa Tyhurst, then described the wide range of activities held at Gasworks. Regular exhibitions, workshops, open days and an outreach programme allow the work of Gasworks to reach a broad community. As well as acting as an international interface, Gasworks provides subsidised studio spaces for 8 artists per year and annually invites up to 20 international artists to each participate in a three-month residency.

Rosa then introduced Julia Padilla, an emerging artist from Argentina, who was currently engaged in one of these residencies. Julia discussed her work illustrating the talk with slides of recently created sculptures incorporating locally found objects.
