Clapham’s historic street nameplates

These markers tell us more than just street names. Erected on private initiative and then by the vestries, they show civic endeavour seeking to bring order to the growing suburbs. Their designs reflect community pride. The stories of how they were erected – and sometimes opposed by householders – shed light on contemporary attitudes to the role of local government.
