Report from our Annual General Meeting

The Clapham Society’s Annual General Meeting on Monday 19th October highlighted its ongoing work to improve the local environment, engage residents and preserve Clapham’s distinctive character.

Three major initiatives featured this year. The Society continued its environmental work by planting bulbs in the grassy area beside Clapham Underground station, and keeping the shady garden watered and thriving over the hot dry summer.

It also organised an environmental awareness competition for children from three local schools. Pupils were invited to illustrate their vision of a cleaner, better Clapham, with nine winning designs now displayed in shop windows across Clapham Old Town.

A third initiative focused on the bridge near Clapham North station. An architectural competition attracted numerous entries to explore how the bridge and its surroundings could be improved to create a more attractive gateway into London. The winning architects have been selected, with the next stage involving securing funding to bring the project to life.

The meeting also covered the Society’s wider activities, including commenting on local planning applications, holding regular talks, researching and writing local history stories, conducting guided walks and publishing a redesigned newsletter, which keeps residents informed about local issues and developments.

Guest Speaker Jeremy Keates also gave a valuable insight about the work of the Clapham Business Improvement District (BID), outlining its business support scheme, proposed Digital Clapham Card, community safety measures and their own programme of local events.

Together, these initiatives reflect the Society’s continued commitment to improving Clapham’s environment, celebrating local involvement and shaping the area’s future.
