Brixton windmill open dayyA treat to close Week 2 of Lambeth Heritage Festival could be a visit to Brixton Windmill which was built in 1816 and is London’s last working windmill. The Lambeth Festival offers the change of a tour of the building and a food festival the following day.

Open afternoon

Sat 11th Sept 1.00 – 5.00 pm in-person at Brixton Windmill, Windmill Gardens, SW2 5DA

On this free guided tour of Brixton Windmill you will see two sets of millstones – the original wind-powered machinery, and the smaller stones installed by the Ashby family in 1902 that were driven by steam. Now they run on electricity and are used by our volunteer millers to produce Brixton Windmill flour.

Harvest Festival

Sun 12th Sept 1.00 – 5.00 pm in-person at Brixton Windmill

A mini food festival celebrating harvest time and how wheat and flour are a staple of food around the world and food as a universal language. Families and local residents from different backgrounds and generations will be encouraged to share their experience and traditions of preparing wheat-based food stuffs. They will be invited to create a mini food festival celebrating harvest time and flour. Windmill open for pre-booked tours.

Milling demonstrations will take place with the hand querns outside the mill. There will also be arts and crafts activities for children and families to depict their food stories.
